Background
The EURO 6 standard for passenger cars becomes effective in 2015, and it further strengthens the requirements for how much new cars may pollute. As a direct consequence of this there is a great demand on the ingenuity of developers of new car engines . All components and systems in and around the engine are subject to new innovations - including the water pump.
Technology
In the new ON/OFF water pump the flow of the cooling fluid in the refrigeration cycle is interrupted by a pneumatically actuated case that encapsulates the impeller in the water pump. The cooling fluid and the pneumatic mechanism controlling the casing are separated by three membranes, as opposed to the conventional water pump seal. The membrane structure is even under difficult operating conditions extremely efficient. The mechanism controlling the casing has a so-called failsafe function - ie. by lack of vacuum, the water pump will work as usual.

Advantages
Compared to the seal, there is no friction in the membrane system, and thus it is less likely to wear. Another advantage is the reduced risk of damage caused by dirt in the cooling system. The ON / OFF water pump has, in other words, a more reliable and durable construction compared to a conventional water pump.
