Cold weather takes it toll on cars – are you prepared?

As a wholesaler, it is important to be prepared for sale of the standard winter products during the winter time. But it is just as important to be updated on product groups that include the parts, which suffer the most during winter time, such as:

• Steering parts
• Suspension
• Brake calipers
• Hand brake and clutch cables
• Transmission parts
• Compartment or bonnet gas springs

In this way, an upsell opportunity is created for both distributors / wholesalers and garages. Seize the opportunity and read below what to pay extra attention to during this cold time.

Steering parts
It is not only the damage to the road surface in the form of holes that are hard on all the steering and suspension parts. Severe frost makes the boots on tie rod ends, ball joints, stabilizers and track control arms as well as the bushings rigid and inflexible. This allows dirt, water and salt to penetrate behind the steering rack gaiter and damage the function of the ball head.

Triscan’s steering programme includes more than 6,000 references in OE quality - and with a coverage of more than 97%  it is Europe's widest programme. For many track control arms Triscan also offers ball joints and bushings as an individual component, and thereby a complete replacement of the track control arm can be avoided. The programme also includes steering rack gaiters for ball joints, tie rod ends and and stabilizers. For steering racks, the programme contains both vehicle-specific and universal steering rack gaiters.

Suspension
The hard frost in combination with holes in the roads is also hard on the coil springs and shock absorbers. The coil springs and shock absorbers easily break at the seal of the piston. In either case a replacement is needed.

Triscan’s programme of coil springs, which covers more than 83% of the car parc, comprises more than 2,950 references in OE quality. All shock absorbers come from Monroe and the programme covers more than 89% of the car parc (more than 3,430 references).

Brake calipers
The seal of the cylinders, the dust covers at the sliding levers and the return springs are particularly vulnerable during the  winter. Especially the plastic housing in the electric calipers, which encapsulates the electronics, is challenged at low temperatures, where the risk of cracks and other damages is bigger than otherwise. Once water and dirt penetrate into the electronics, it is just a matter of time when the electric parking brake is not working anymore.

Triscan’s programme consists entirely of Budweg’s exchange programme of brake calipers - covering more than 96% of the car park and includes more than 2,685 references.

Brake, clutch and gear shift cables
The winter is also an issue for brake, clutch and gear shift cables. If dirt and small particles as eg. grain of sand penetrate into the cable's gaiter, it can cause wear and tear on the cable plastic cover. This can cause the cable to corrode, jam or break.

Triscan’s programme of cables with a coverage of more than 87% is Europe's largest programme, and includes more than 3,230 car specific references in OE quality. All cables are delivered with all necessary fittings.

Transmission parts
For transmission parts, it is especially the gaiters, which cause problems in the cold winter weather. The lack of flexibility leads to cracking up of the gaiters or they may completely detach from the drive shaft. In both cases, the drive shaft grease disappears and thus also the required lubrication. If the problem is discovered in time, the drive shaft can usually be saved.

Triscan’s programme of drive shaft gaiters covers very widely and includes both vehicle-specific and universal solutions. The programme also includes special tools for mounting as well as the hose clamps.

Gas springs for the luggage and engine compartment
Gas springs are also exposed during the wintertime. At very low temperatures, the gas spring piston rod pull together so much that the gas will be able to pass between the piston rod and its seal. In this case, a replacement is inevitable.

Triscan’s programme of gas springs covers more than 92% of the European car parc, and includes more than 1,380 references in OE quality.

Are you prepared?
Thus, there are plenty of good reasons for top-tuning your stocks and for being extra prepared for the repairs that car owner faces after a long and hard winter.
